What is a Transaction?

Benign prostate enlargement is a condition in which the prostate gland enlarges with age and this enlargement narrows the urethra, making urine flow difficult. The medical name for this condition is “benign prostatic hyperplasia” (BPH), which is common with age and can affect men’s quality of life. An enlarged prostate can prevent the bladder from emptying completely and cause discomfort when urinating.

What are the Symptoms?

Symptoms of benign prostate enlargement may include

  • Weak or Intermittent Urine Flow: Slow or abrupt cessation of urine flow.
  • Difficulty Starting Urination: Difficulty or delay in starting to urinate.
  • Frequent Need to Urinate: Frequent need to go to the toilet, especially at night.
  • Burning or pain when urinating: Discomfort or pain when urinating.
  • Feeling that the bladder is not completely empty: Feeling that the bladder is full even after urinating.

How is it done?

Your doctor may perform several tests to diagnose benign prostate enlargement:

  1. Physical Examination: The doctor may perform a physical examination to assess the size of the prostate.
  2. PSA Test The prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test measures the level of a prostate-related protein in the blood and provides information about prostate enlargement.
  3. Urinalysis: A urine sample is taken to check for infection or other problems.
  4. Uroflowmetry: A test that measures the flow rate of urine, showing how strongly urine flows.
  5. Ultrasound: Ultrasound is used to visualize the prostate and bladder, providing information about size and obstruction.

What are the Treatment Methods?

  • Medication The doctor may prescribe medicines that shrink or relax the prostate gland. These medicines are used to make urination easier and relieve symptoms.
  • Minimally Invasive Interventions:
    • HoLEP (Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate): Prostate tissue is removed using a Holmium laser.
    • Water Vapor Therapy: Water vapor is used to shrink prostate tissue and improve urine flow.
  • Surgical Intervention:
    • TUR-P (Transurethral Prostate Resection): It allows the urine flow to be corrected by removing some of the prostate tissue from the urinary tract.

Depending on the severity of the enlarged prostate and your symptoms, your doctor will determine the most appropriate treatment for you.
