What is it?

ERCP is a specialized endoscopic method used to diagnose and treat problems in the bile ducts and pancreatic duct. ERCP, which is used for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, is usually applied in cases such as gallstones, duct obstruction and pancreatitis.

How is it done?

The patient is sedated before the procedure. The endoscope is guided through the mouth from the esophagus into the stomach and small intestine. Using a catheter, dye is injected into the bile and pancreatic ducts and X-ray imaging is performed. In cases of blockage, a stent can be placed to open the canal or stones can be removed. The procedure can take about 30-90 minutes.
