What is a Transaction?
Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PNL) is a minimally invasive surgical method used to treat kidney stones, which is performed through a small incision in the skin. In this procedure, a small incision of about 1 cm is made in the lumbar region to access the kidney. The stones in the kidney are crushed and removed from the body using special instruments and technologies such as ultrasound or laser. In this way, even large stones are reduced to small pieces and safely removed.
What are the Symptoms?
PNL is used to treat symptoms of kidney stones. Symptoms of kidney stones can be:
- Severe Kidney Pain: Severe pain in the side or back, often coming in waves and called “colic”.
- Blood in Urine The color of the urine may be red or pink, sometimes only microscopically visible.
- Burning when urinating: There may be a burning sensation when urinating due to irritation caused by a urinary tract infection or stone.
- Nausea and Vomiting: Pain due to kidney stones can cause nausea and vomiting.
- Fever and Infection: Fever may occur if the kidney stone has caused an infection.
- Back Pain Pain can be felt in the back, especially around the waist.
- Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections: Kidney stones can cause frequent urinary tract infections.
How is it done?
- Anesthesia The PNL procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia, which means that the patient sleeps during the procedure and does not feel anything.
- Skin Incision A small incision of about 1 cm is made in the lumbar region to reach the kidney.
- Access to the Kidney: The kidney is accessed through the incision with the help of a special tool and the area where the stone is located is entered.
- Stone Crushing Stones in the kidney are broken into small pieces using ultrasound waves or a laser.
- Stone Removal: Broken stone fragments are removed from the body with special tools.
- Nephrostomy Tube: After the procedure, a thin tube may be placed in the kidney to allow urine to flow out and to monitor the healing process. This tube is usually removed after a few days.
What are the Treatment Methods?
- PNL (Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy): The most common and effective method used to remove kidney stones directly from the kidney. Because the incision size is small, the healing process is usually fast.
