What is a Transaction?

A thyroid biopsy is a procedure to detect abnormal cells or masses in the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is a gland in the front of our neck that regulates our body’s metabolism. If there is a lump or mass in this gland, a biopsy may be needed. This procedure plays an important role in diagnosing serious diseases such as thyroid cancer.

How is it done?

At our clinic in Çiğli, Izmir, thyroid biopsy is usually performed under ultrasound guidance. The ultrasound device shows the internal structure of the thyroid gland in detail and allows the biopsy site to be accurately identified. During the procedure, a small tissue sample is taken from the suspicious area of the thyroid gland with a fine needle. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, meaning that only the area to be biopsied is numbed and the patient does not feel pain during the procedure. The procedure is short and is usually completed within a few minutes. The tissue sample is examined in the laboratory and the results are usually available within a few days.

What are the Symptoms?

Symptoms that may require a thyroid biopsy may include

  • Sensation of a swelling or mass in the thyroid gland: Noticing a lump or mass in the front of the neck.

  • Swelling in the neck Visible swelling or enlargement in the neck area.
  • Chronic weakness and fatigue: Loss of energy and fatigue due to problems with the thyroid gland.

What are the Treatment Methods?

  • Surgical Interventions: If cancerous cells are detected in the biopsy, the cancerous tissue may need to be surgically removed.
  • Medication Therapy: In case of thyroid hormone deficiency, hormone replacement therapy or drugs used in the treatment of thyroid cancer may be prescribed.
  • Radiotherapy If thyroid cancer is detected, radiation therapy can be used to destroy cancerous cells.
  • Artificial Intelligence Assisted Diagnosis: Biopsy results are analyzed with artificial intelligence algorithms, enabling faster and more accurate diagnosis.

Thyroid biopsy is an important method for early diagnosis of the disease and your doctor will determine the most appropriate treatment plan based on the biopsy results.
